My Kindergarteners have been rocking their CVC words this year. I am so proud of them. I found the best way to teach short vowels, is to expose kids to them in a variety of methods. We talk about them in whole group and in guided reading. Students get independent practice in morning work buckets and literacy centers.
I just created a new CVC Word Work unit that is perfect for teaching CVC words. They are in color and black and white to meet your printing needs. You can print on bright colors to make it look just as cute as color.
I LOVE using play dough in my morning work buckets. It is great for fine motor and the kids stay engaged the entire time. I have a Growing Bundle with Play Dough Activities or you can buy this one by itself here.
When you first introduce CVC words, you want kids to focus on the sounds (phonemic awareness) first. I LOVE these sound pushing cards. Again, these cards are in color and black and white, but I think they look AWESOME with this bright paper.
These letter cards are my FAVORITE!!! They coming with the beginning letter missing, the middle letter missing, the final letter missing, and all of the letters missing. This makes them great for targeting specific skills (think RTI). You can use dry erase markers, magnets, or letter tiles with these fabulous cards. I put them in a 5×7 photo box (on sale at Michaels). There is enough room for letter tiles or dry erase markers. I included a cut up piece of felt (Dollar Tree) to use as an eraser.
These clipcards are great for small group or work buckets. Again, you can place them in a photo box (4×6 or 5×7) with the clothespins inslide.
This another class favorite. Kids read the words, and then attach the photo. If you put these in a pocket chart center, you can quickly look over and see if the kids can independently do it. If you want kids to do it at a table, perhaps morning buckets, you can add velcro. This will let you know if students understand it.
CVC puzzles are great for self checking. I usually have kids work on these on the floor so they have lots of space to lay them all out. You can also have kids write down the words after they build them.
I also created these CVC Printables. They are great for quick and easy morning work. You can use a bingo dabber and stamps to give it a hands on approach to teaching. There are 5 different sheets, for a total of 80 sheets. You can buy these here.
Are you ready for your first FREE CVC activity? Write and Wipe word families. There are three boards for each short vowel. You can find these FREE here. Students can also use letter tiles with this one.
This Roll a CVC activity was in our morning work buckets last week (silly nonsense words for Read Across America) The kids loved it so much, we will keep it until Spring Break or longer! You can get this freebie here.
