It’s that time of year again. Time to go green and try to catch that leprechaun! Here are my favorite ways to celebrate.
Read Aloud
Any special day starts with a special book. These are a few of my favorite St. Patrick’s Day books. These books can all be found on scholastic.com or amazon.com They are perfect for talking about how to catch a leprechaun, and why to catch a leprechaun (hello gold).
Catch That Leprechaun
Creating traps is always a class favorite. We have the kids make the traps at home. Do all the kids create them? No, but even if they don’t bring one in, they enjoy seeing their friend’s traps. We have them due March 16th. They get to show the kids their traps. Then we set them up that night. After the kids leave, the real fun happens. Our leprechaun always makes a mess. He knocks over chairs, spills pencils, and he leaves glitter everywhere! I also like to have him leave footprints around the room. This is just washable paint.
Having kids make their traps at home isn’t the only way to celebrate the holiday. You can also have them write about their trap. They will still enjoy using the imaginations and sharing their stories with the class. You get this template here.
Centers
I love using themed centers. It does take a little extra time to prep, but the kids get excited when they them. They will still more engaged when they are excited about the activity. I love adding mini erasers to my math centers. You can purchase these centers here.
Crafts
Crafts are amazing for many reasons. Students practice fine motor skills, listening and following directions, AND, I think a lot people forget about this, it gives parents a keepsake. Kindergarten is a special time for parents. I try to do a craft every week. This math craft is including in my St.Patrick’s Day Activities. This pack also comes with the Most Wanted Template posted above.
Printables
Sometimes using worksheets in early childhood gets a bad rap, but like everything, there is a time and place. First, kids need to be using a pencil and writing. Also, they are easy to prep. And, lets be honest, this year, anything goes. I wouldn’t recommend your students sit at their desk all day everyday with worksheets, but they are a valuable teaching tool. You can purchase these here.
Free Activities
I have two free activities you can use in your classroom. First, is the St. Patrick’s Day Word Problems. This little freebie includes word problems with hands on manipulatives and printable word problems. You get this freebie here. I also have this Free Rainbow of Sight Words. You can use any list of sight words to write on the rainbow. You can get this Editable Sight Word List HERE. Have a wonderful St. Patrick’s day, friends!
