I LOVE The Old Lady book series. They are silly, rhyming books that are perfect for sequencing. Your students will love them because they are predictable and funny. They are great for a day when your class needs a break from the curriculum. They are also wonderful for a sub.
We always start by reading the book. Usually, by the end of the story, the kids are able to read along with me because they have heard so many times what she swallowed. I always encourage students to read along with me, especially if they have heard the book before. After we read the book, we retell the story in a pocket chart. I will pick a stick and ask students what comes next.
After we sequence the book, the kids get their own sequencing sheet. They color the pictures, cut them out, and glue them. I love that this sneaks in a little fine motor with the cutting.
These are perfect for subs. Once you have read one book to the students, they will understand how it goes. It takes about an hour to complete the story, pocket chart, and independent practice. It is perfect for emergency sub plans. Just place the book, the laminated sequencing cards, and a class set of response sheets in a bag. I found these bags on Amazon and use them for everything.
See how nicely everything fits? A sub could pull the bag and easily teach it, especially if kids have done it before. They can help the sub to know the flow of the lesson.
I even have a FREE copy of the There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Book for you to try out. If you love it, you can buy the BUNDLE of 16 books or buy each book you have individually.
