This year, I have been introducing a new poem every week for shared reading.
I have always done shared reading…sporadically.
But now, we are reading the poem EVERY SINGLE DAY.
AND, I have been changing the poem EVERY SINGLE WEEK.
I have been doing this for 5 WHOLE WEEKS.
My class has seriously been loving it. And so have I. We have been working on so many reading skills in just 5 minutes a day. We have been working on directionality, one to one correspondence, fluency, and letter/word id. This poem came from this amazing FREE in this September Poems and Songs pack I found on TPT. It is to the tune of Row, Row, Row Your Boat.
On Monday, I point read the poem twice. Usually, the kids start to read along by the second time.Then I pick a few students to point, while everyone else reads. I ask each student to find a letter or word they know. On Tuesday, I point to the poem one time, and then let the kids point. Wednesday-Friday, just the kids point.By Friday, everyone has had a chance.
This popular poem is all over pinterest. I typed it up and you can grab it FREE HERE. The apple clipart comes from Creative Clips.
I like my shared reading poems to be cut up word by word. I think this helps with one to one correspondence. With this poem, I gave kids :special picture” pieces. When we read that word, students got up and put the picture on top of the word. They had a lot of fun with this. I found this poem in Tara West’s Kinder Literacy Units.
I think the pointers are the kids FAVORITE part of shared reading. I am always misplacing my pointers. I can never find them when I want to. So, last night, I went to Michaels and bought this cardboard container. An oatmeal tub would work just as well. I decorated it with some washi tape and VOILA! A beautiful pointer holder.

Oh, I want to do morning messages everyday too! I'm hoping to start them…eventually!
I love this! We use Words Their Way, and each week has a poem to go with the sort. We're just reading it from the flippy book now, but this would be an amazing way to incorporate all those skills! Thanks so much for the great idea!
