I hope you all had a restful winter break and enjoyed time with your friends and family. I put together a little freebie for you when you return to the classroom. Students can write about what they did during winter break. Then, I have them share their writing under the document camera. This encourages students to write more. Plus, it gives them the opportunity to share their break. You can get this freebie here.
There are always those students who did not have a fabulous winter break for a variety of reasons. I know some of those kids will just tell tall tales about what they did, but some kids may get sad or angry. If you know you have students like that, I also created a Ready For January prompt where kids can tell you what they are most excited about learning or doing this month. I plan on printing out both pages and giving students a choice.
When I return from break, I always take time to review classroom expectations. I put together an entire list of what I like to review. You can print it out and check off the boxes as you go. You may want to add to the list as you go to. You may notice other things your class forgot how to do. Get the list here.
I try to get back into a modified routine on day 1. We will discuss routines and procedures during our Morning Meeting. Then. I will do the writing prompt, so students are getting back into the routine of writing. Then, I allow them to share, which will help cut down on talking about what they did during their break- but be realistic, they will talk more then usual.
For math, we won’t start curriculum right away. Instead, I will do a Winter Math Craft. This is a great way to get their math brains ready for learning, while working on listening and following directions. You can find my Winter Math Crafts here.
I like to review about what it means to be a good friend. During our literacy block, I will read The Magic of Friendship Snow by Andi Cann is great winter book for discussing friendship. Plus, the illustrations in this story are beautiful. The story is perfect for returning to school after Winter break. It is about a little girl named JoJo who does not know how to make friends. Then, she meets a magical snowman who teaches her how to be a friend. Not only is the a wonderful review, but it is a great way to decorate your classroom bulletin boards. You can get this writing prompt, plus many more activities in my TPT shop here.
