Today was a rainy day. it was the perfect day to talk about rainbows and work on Decomposing 10 Rainbows. Fluently decomposing 5 is a Kindergarten standard and fluently decomposing 10 is a first grade standard. I still did making 10 with my Kindergarteners because mine are already fluent with 5. and the Kindergarten standard does include adding and subtracting within 10. I don’t want to hold my students back, since they are ready for 10s. I have included both in my free resource.
We started by making the anchor chart. We talked about the pattern with the numbers going up to 10 and then back down to 10. Then, I had my students independently complete the worksheet. Finally, we did the cloud rainbow. I cut 1 inch strips of paper. Students wrote both number sentences on one color. We talked about how it doesn’t matter which part goes first.

Do you need more ways to practice decompose 5 and 10? You should try Shake and Spill. Students put 5 or 10 yellow and red counters in a cup. They pour them out, put them on a ten frame, and add them up or subtract them. You get these for only $3. Shake and Make 5 and 10.
